Based on a qualitative analysis, this study explores the consumption in voluntary simplicity lifestyles in Japan. It clarifies backward consumption and ethical consumption as alternative consumption styles for voluntary simplifiers. Moreover, it is considered that backward consumption is affected by residual institutional effects.
